1 Chairman's Welcome
Pete thank everyone for turning up and emphasised that the AGM is the most important meeting of the year, without it, the club ceases to exist!
He stated that the AGM was the main forum for you, the members to decide how the club will be run for the next year and that it was important that if members had anything to say they speak up. He also stressed the importance of volunteers and requested that if anyone felt they could help run the club, they put themselves forward as a committee member or officer.
2 Apologies for non attendance
Sonia Doublet (Committee), Theresa Smith, Jane & Adrian Bickle, Judy Webster
3 Minutes of the previous AGM
These were distributed, read and adopted as a true record.
Proposed by Craig Paget and Seconded by Mike Newton Woof
4 Matters Arising
Quorum for AGMs as voted on at last AGM had been duly updated in constitution.
5 Chairman's Report
Firstly, Pete thanked everyone who had contributed to and supported the club this year be it as an officer, committee member, captain, team player or club-night player.
He said he would steer clear of reporting team successes, et cetera (Jo loved doing
that!!!); suffice it to say that we had some successes and some not-so-successes. In the face of difficult opposition he thought they had all done well.
Pete also stated that unfortunately, we had some bad news too. As he was sure all of you were aware, having read our "Matchpoint Closure" plea for support, club-night
attendance had been very poor. This resulted in us paying for courts we couldn't fill on Mondays. With other costs this had resulted in a loss of our operating capital. If losses continue, the club will have to close. Some steps have been taken to address
this and others would be discussed and voted on later. Ideas were requested on how to improve club funds, and if nothing else, supporting Matchpoint by coming to club-night will help enormously.
6 Treasurer's Report
Craig issued the balance sheet which showed a large loss of ££1013.20.
He reported this was our worst year to date.
The majority of the loss could be attributed to loss of income on Club Nights.
The change to Match Fee structure last year had insured Matches were self funding now.
The Committee had looked at new membership fee structures as detailed in the letter sent to all members. (£115 for year and no club night fee or £95 for year and £1 club night fee)
It was thought this would give us more guaranteed income and the meeting was asked to vote for their preferred charging structure.
A long discussion ensued. Questions raised included queries re court fees (only increase with inflation), shuttle costs (plastics to be used once a month) and splitting membership into Winter and Summer (not viable for this year).
Craig stressed that he was no looking to recover the full deficit in one year - it would take 2 or 3.
It was also stated that new members would bring in extra income. Unfortunately several who have come down since Xmas have not stayed due to poor club nights.
A proposal was made by Julie L and seconded by Jo, that we offer all members both options rather than impose one. This was added as a third voting option and voting was cast as follows.
Option 1 £95 membership £1 club night fee 8 votes
Option 2 £115 membership fee No club night fee 8 votes
Option 3 Offer both 1 & 2 to members 15 votes
New structure to be published on board and circulated to all members
7 Secretary's Report
TEAM SELECTIONS
The year kicked off with Team Selections last August and the Selection Committee elected by the main committee was Pete Burgess, Ian Bland, Matt Bunton, Mike and me. Selections are always difficult and tough decisions have to be made, opinions differed even within the committee but players on the whole accepted the decisions and got on and played and tried to prove that they should be higher up the ranking order this year. Disappointingly we were unable to add another Southampton as planned and unfortunately lost our Waterside 4th Team. We ended up with 10 Teams across the 3 Leagues.
FIXTURES EVENINGS
Always interesting - Paul and I covered Waterside, Dan and I Winchester and myself Southampton. Avoiding shift patterns, holiday dates, tournament dates etc. is always fun especially with some other teams attitudes towards more that one match in a week!. Over 120 matches were arranged, typed up and then communicated to Captains, Team Members etc.
LEAGUE POSITIONS
WATERSIDE LEAGUE
MIXED A
The closest ever result this year, but under the guidance of John Hepworth they did it again and won the Watersdie League Division 1 for a sixth successive season. It went down to the last game of the last match though - just to keep it interesting like! Played 10, won 8, drew 2.
MIXED B
In Division 1 again this year and Captain Tony Carter had a tough time. When we realised that we had lost a lot of top men from our Waterside fray we tried to effectively drop our second team from Waterside and maintain 1, 3 and 4 places, but this met with stiff opposition from the league and unfortunately it was this team that suffered the brunt of that decision. Not only did we end up with a record of played 10, Won 0, Drew 0 lost 10, we only picked up 4 games all season and poor Tony also had to contend with some silly woman breaking her ankle half way through the season!. Strangely relegation and Division 2 beckon for next year.
MIXED C
Gladys Appleby was at the helm for an eventful year that saw her calling on reserves such as Laurie, Matt B , Dan and Woof!!! Played 10, won 2, drew 3, lost 5. A mixed bag, but unfortunately not enough to keep them in Division 2 and relegation is certain to Division 3 for next year.
WINCHESTER LEAGUE
MIXED 1
Paul Hoff took over as Captain this year and what a job he did. In Division 2 this season they made sure of a Division 1 place next year with an emphatic played 10 Won 10 record to finish on 83 points 22 clear of second place.
MIXED 2
Julie Lakomy took over this team as well as doing her reserve monitoring duties for the Winchester League. As with Waterside it was this, the second team, that suffered when some of the top men decided not to play Winchester mixed and this was reflected in the played 10, won 1 lost 9 record. It resulted in a finish on 24 points and relegation to Division 2 next season.
MIXED 3
Judy (who wasn't even playing Winchester League to start with) kindly took over this team and also had a tough year. She started with only 2 ladies not 3, but at least with assurances from a couple that they would fill in. Reserves became a problem towards the end of the season and she did well to finish with a played 12 won 1, lost 11 record. They had 16 points and will be relegated next year, but hopefully to better and more enjoyable and competitive games.
LADIES
Chrissie as always looked after the Winchester Ladies and with a record of won 6 lost 2 had there best season yet to finish 2nd in Division 1 behind Colbury and 20 points clear of 3rd place.
MENS 1
Now last year I said "Matt Bunton went one better than last year and forced, cajoled and generally bullied his mens team into winning the league by just 1 game", this year I can say almost the same again, cos they won the league by just 2 games!!! - so one better than last year if you're still with me!!! For the record they won 6 games and lost 2 and Wildern who were second won all 8 - strange but true! Points were 52.
MENS 2
Under the "guidance"??? of Matt Pascoe our intrepid 2nd team were 2nd in Division 2. They won 5 and lost 5 to finish just 1 point ahead of 3rd place. We believe only one team gets promoted, but are awaiting confirmation as everything else in Winchester is 2!!
SOUTHAMPTON
MIXED
Jacky was in control (I use that term loosely looking at who was in the team) and the team finished 2nd in Division 1. Notorious won the Division and no one was ever going to touch them, so a good result. Played 12, won 9. It looks like there is a possibility of promotion to Premiership next season as we understand that one team maybe dropping out, but this has not been confirmed as yet.
RESERVE PROBLEMS
The reserve tracking system was again a great success - we lost no points through misuse and my thanks to Julie for running the Winchester part of the tracking and all the captains for their co-operation.
TEAM COMPETITIONS
WATERSIDE KNOCKOUT
Congratulations to the A team who again won the wonderfully elegant pitcher!! Well done to captain John and his happy band of Kim, Julie, Jo, Dan and Rob who beat Butts Ash in the Final. One their was they had beaten TNT A, Falcons and Oaklands - all excellent results, especially with the new handicapping system dependant on last years league position..
The B team had a bye in round one, but they fell foul of the new handicapping and lost to Oaklands in the 2nd round and the C team lost to Falcons C in round 2 also after a bye.
BANERJEE CUP
The first team lost in the Semi Final to Notorious by the closest of margins, 5-4 and the last game saw Paul pick up an injury - else we'd have had them!! They had already beaten Caer Gwent 1 and Brookfield in the earlier rounds.
The second team beat BTC in the first round, but lost to Four Marks in the second
The third team lost to Butts Ash in round 1, who were playing off a very nice handicap being new top the league.
ESSO CUP
Jacky's Team went one better than last year and won the Esso Cup. They beat Notorious in the first round (wahey!!), then Bishops Waltham and finally Brookfield 8-1 in the final. Well done to Jacky and Paul, Jane and Matt B, Kim and Dan.
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
This year it was again the A Team that gained entry to the competition, but the team that actually stepped out onto court was not recognisable from the original Southampton Team due to several injuries. Many thanks to Sonia, Kim, Linda B, Paul, Woof, Rob and Matt P who all stepped out alongside me to represent Matchpoint on a long hard day. Oh we had to play Notorious again!!!! and Falcons.
INTER-DISTRICT TEAM KNOCKOUT
As usual the Waterside League sent 6 unsuspecting soles to represent them in this very tough competition. This years we had 5 players chosen to go. Kim, Jacky and Matt B, Woof and John. They lost to - oh wait a minute was it Notorious in disguise as Portsmouth in round 1 and then Basingstoke in the plate.
TOURNAMENTS
BOURNEMOUTH OPEN
Foolishly some of us decided to add another tournament to our repertoire this season.
Matt B and Paul and myself and Jacky both won our first round level matches, but success went to our head and we lost the second rounds. John (and Notorious partner Jamie) had a bye in one, but also lost in round 2. In the mixed Matt & I and John & his partner Hannah both had byes in round one but lost in round 2, Jacky and Paul played and lost round 1.
CORNISH OPEN
John and partner Hazel (Top Flight) travelled to Cornwall for the Cornish Open and reached the 1/4 finals
HANTS RESTRICTED
The main event saw John our only representative. Mixed - lost 2nd round, mens lost 1st round, singles lost 2nd round.
The handicap event saw Paul & Jacky win 5/6 and Matt B & I win 4/6 and to finish 2nd and 3rd respectively. In the mens Paul and Matt won 3/6 to finish 3rd and Jacky and I won all the ladies games in the "non event" ladies doubles - only 3 pairs entered.
WATERSIDE
Open - Non Handicap
Again this year held at our home venue of Totton Recreation Centre, we had 4 pairs entered.
Fran and Ian N, came close but didn't pick up a game, Jacky and Paul won 1/4 to finish 4th in group. Matt B and I won 3/4 to finish 2nd in group and then play Jenny and John who had taken 4/4 in their group in the semi final. Jenny and John won 21-16, but the lost the final 21-7 to a Stonehenge pair.
Mixed Handicap
This year at West Totton and it was Kim and John that despite a massive handicap took top honours and were never beaten. Rob and I were also there and had a mixed day!
Ladies
Kim ad Jacky won 5/6 and won overall, Jeanette and I were there propping everyone else up!
Mens
Rob and Tony won 1/6 to finish 6th, John and Butts Ash partner Matt Anderson won 4/6 to be 3rd and Paul and matt B won 5/6 to finish 2nd
WESSEX OPEN
Matt B and Paul won their first round match and lost the 2nd.
WINCHESTER
Mixed Open - Non handicap
4 Matchpoint pairs braved this tough event.
Yip and Kim won 1/4 in their group as did Jeanette and Rob.
Jacky and Paul and Matt & I won 2/4 to finish 3rd in group.
Mixed Handicap
Kim and Ian won 2/7 to finish 6th, Jacky and Paul (looking at times like a scene from Bolero) won 5/7 to finish 2nd and Matt and Colbury partner Julie Kingston won 7/7 to win the event - the 3rd year in a row for Matt - with 3 different partners - his handicap will be storming next year!
Mens and Ladies Doubles
Kim and Jacky won the ladies event and Matt B and Paul won the mens event - what a great day and set of results for Matchpoint.
BASINGSTOKE
John and partner Susannah reached the 1/4 finals
OXFORD
Matt B and Kim won 3/5 in their group.
HANTS & ISLE OF WIGHT GAMES
We sent 3 players to represent New Forest East. Kim and John were first pair and Matt B and Colburyite Julie Kingston were 2nd pair.
FUN TOURNAMENT
Cancelled due to lack of interest
NORWICH
This year 4 of us travelled to Norwich to play in the King Penguins weekend. Kim had most success winning the first tournament with chosen partner before injuring herself. Matt C unfortunately has barely started before he damaged his self and Matt B and I remained relatively unscathed and were 2nd in the 2nd tournament. I seem to remember drinking lots and hurting lots!
PENGUINS FRIENDLY
Matt again managed to persuade some of us to Wimbledon this time, for a friendly. Jane, Kim, Sonia and myself, John, Kieran, Matt and Ian were the gullible ones and the excellent food afterwards only partially made up for the pain.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
This year held at the beginning of June for 3 weeks our Club Championships started slowly but built to a bumper mixed entry at the end.
Ladies Singles
This was a non event with only Kim willing and able so she was winner by default, but had to work for it as we made her play in the mens competition!!
Mens Singles
A poor entry of just 9 (only 7 of whom turned up) saw John win 6/6 to win over Dan 5/6.
Ladies Doubles
Saw just 5 pairs entered. Jacky and I won with 8/8 games won with Chrissie and Kim 2nd.
Mens Doubles
7 pairs played in one group and there was no clear winner, it was very close and depended on the last game. Eventually on points Dan and Woof were winners with 5/6 and only 1 point dropped, while Ian N and Paul were 2nd with 5/6 and only 1 point dropped, but Dan and Woof had actually beaten Ian and Paul. 3rd were Rob and John who could have changed everything..
Mixed Doubles
11 pairs in two groups saw Sonia & Woof and Kim & John storm the groups unbeaten. Jacky & Paul and Jeanette & Rob were the runners up. It was however Kim & John and Jeanette & Rob who came through the semis and Kim and John who went on to take the final 15-7
Excellent events played in good spirit
SOCIAL
Once again we had our Xmas function at Southampton Park Hotel. Woof did an excellent job of getting money out of people and Kim had arranged it all beautifully, right down to a little pressie for everyone. I liked my phallic gnome!!
It's a very long time ago, but we also had a presentation evening last year at the Bold Forrester at Marchwood. The buffet was good, the company excellent, we played skittles, did silly quizzes, presented our prizes for the Club Championships and the special trophies to Jacky Barron and Paul Hoff and generally had a good sociable evening..
CLUB NIGHT
Club Night attendance has not been good this year as I am sure Craig will have mentioned. It has picked up lately and let's hope that is a sign of things to come. Thursdays nights were only run for May. A new board system was introduced of committee member plus top person to choose. We also introduced the ladders - mixed and levels to encourage competitive fun play. Entries were good, but they have not taken off as well as we would have liked. There has been some movement and I would urge everyone to make a challenge and see how high you can go (no that's not a drinking game Woof!!)
COACHING
This years coaching was with Jamie Russell and certainly the two I attended were delivered in a professional manner and everyone seemed to enjoy them and participate with great enthusiasm. A great improvement on last year and lets get some more set up soon. It can only benefit us all as players and the Club as well.
JUNIOR COACHING
Still on hold, but with a view to resurrecting at Redbridge School in September.
Nice to note we have 4 juniors at the moment at normal club night and 2 did the coaching course too.
SELECTION FORMS
This years forms for Team Selection are printed and available. Please collect them from me before you leave tonight and have them back to Pete Burgess by Monday 23rd August at the very latest. Please be realistic with what you put yourself down for and realise the number of games you could be asked to play. The first fixtures meeting this year is on 5th September so your committee will have to work fast. Your Selection Sub Committee will be elected by the new Committee immediately following this meeting and will then be announced.
CLUB T SHIRTS
If Woof hasn't attacked you yet I am sure he will. We are having new club shirts for the new season and I would like to think all team players and some club players too would invest in one.
THANK YOU
Finally a big thank you to everyone who has assisted me in my 7 years as Secretary of Matchpoint. The Officers and members of the Committee, all the Team Captains (who have a horrible job in the main with lots of problems and complications), the Club members and everyone who has supported teams, coaching, club nights, social and fun events. If I've missed anyone I apologise, thank you anyway, and now you can all breathe a sigh of relief that my final report is over. I can only say that I will miss doing this far more than you will miss me, but I am sure as Pete was heard to say at the last Committee "Jo wont be able to keep her mouth shut for long"!!!
Jo Francis
8 Social Secretary's Reports
Mike stated that most of his report had been covered by Jo!!!!
However it was disappointing that we had to cancel the fun tournament. It was decided YES we did. It was an important social part of the club and the committee had set it stall to re-encourage the social side of the club.
Mike also announced the forthcoming presentation evening at the Bold Forrester at Marchwood on Saturday 7th August and the provisional date for the Xmas do was 23rd December at the Novotel (subsequently altered to 16th)
Polo shirts should be available in 2 weeks.
9 Junior Representatives Report
Mike reported that Paul had offered his support and that the bid was to be done and the courts booked shortly. The club was trying a new venue at Redbridge School and new age group 8-14
10 Changes to Constitution
It was proposed by Dan and seconded by Jacky to split the role of Secretary into Club Secretary and Match Secretary. The motion was passed with no opposition. Jo to update constitution.
11 Election of Officers and Committee for 2002 / 2003
The following were elected:
Position Name Proposed Seconded
Chairman Pete Burgess Jeanette Worsley Matt Pascoe
Treasurer Craig Paget Mike Newton Woof Jo Francis
Club Secretary Ian Bland Jacky Barron Dan Amy
Match Secretary Kim Marsh / John Hepworth Gladys Appleby Jo Francis
Social Secretary Mike Newton Woof Laurie Hillman Ian Bland
Junior Representative Paul Hoff Mike Newton Woof Jo Francis
Committee Dan Amy, Gladys Appleby, Peter Gurd, Sonia Doublet, Matt Bunton (subsequently resigned), Jacky Barron, Matt Pascoe, Tony Carter were all re-elected unopposed.
Ian Newcombe was newly elected to the Committee
Proposed Ian Bland, seconded Chris Pitchers
12 Any Other Business
1 Julie Lakomy raised the point that the committee needs to form a direction for the club and what it is trying to be. Is it a group of Teams with a club or a Club with teams. We are not defining and cannot satisfy everybody. Need a mission statement. New committee to look at
2 Selection forms are ready for collection
3 Laurie raised that the coaching this year had been really successful. Could we do coaching at end of club night if courts free? Good proposition - new committee to take on.
The meeting closed at 9:30pm.
Following the meeting the new Committee met briefly and the Selection sub Committee was elected as follows:
Dan Amy, Pete Burgess, Paul Hoff, Kim Marsh and Mike Newton-Woof
