Minutes of the Sixth Annual General Meeting of

Matchpoint Badminton Club

Held at Totton Recreation Centre on

Monday 28th July 2003

Members Present were:

Pete Burgess (Chairman), Mike Newton-Woof (Chairman), Craig Paget (Treasurer), Jo Francis (Secretary), Matt Bunton (Committee), Jacky Barron (Committee), Ian Bland (Committee), Matt Pascoe (Committee), Pete Gurd (Committee), Gladys Appleby (Committee), Paul Hoff, Denise Doublet, Jane Bickle, Theresa Smith, Tony Carter, Judy Webster, Kate Haydock (plus Adrian Bickle, Dan Amy, Sharon Amy & Julie Lakomy by proxy).

1 Chairman's Welcome

Pete welcomed everyone to the meeting

2 Apologies for non attendance

Sonia Doublet, Dan Amy, Sharon Amy, Fran Harrison

3 Minutes of the previous AGM

These were distributed, read and adopted as a true record.

Proposed by Mike Newton Woof & seconded by Matt Pascoe

4 Matters Arising

Last years balance sheet was posted on Notice Board as promised.

List of qualified Club Coaches was also posted.

5 Chairman's Report

Pete stated that the Club had had a good and fairly successful year. It had been interesting being half a Chairman and Woof had now done the dirty and stayed!!.

Mike said that it always seemed to be the same people at AGMs. He reiterated Pete's thanks for attendance and urged people to pass on the importance of AGMs. If AGM doesn't happen, nor does the Club.

6 Treasurer's Report

Craig issued the balance sheet which showed a small loss of £271.28. The Club funds are (just) still within the magic number of £2000 which we need to survive.

The shortfall needs to be addressed. We could increase membership fees, but Craig did not think it was necessary this year, possibly next.

Jo had done some analysis on Matches and only Teams with 8 players actually cover their own match costs e.g:

8 players

Income H & A = £48

Expenditure: Courts £30 approx., Shuttles 21/2 tubes = £16 approx.

£2 excess

6 players

Income H & A = £36

Expenditure the same or slightly more as an extra game

Loss of approx. £10 per match

4 players

Income H & A = £24

Expenditure: Courts £20 approx., Shuttles 2 tubes - £12.80

Loss of approx. £8.80 per match

It was felt that Matches should cover their own costs and as such it was recommended that Match fees increase to £4 for Waterside Mens and Ladies & Winchester Mens, Ladies and Mixed. The point was made that if you played a lot it would cost you significantly more and would this put people off, but it was thought this was the only fair way to increase revenue and it was peoples choices as to how often they played.

A fee sheet was issued for 2003/04, proposed by Pete B, seconded by Mike and all present voted in favour (see attached).

Craig issued a Junior Balance Sheet which showed a balance of £538.42. The figures covered the period form inception of the Junior Club to date. A question was raised as to whether we can apply for another grant. Yes - Mike has it in hand when required. Junior Club is at present suspended whilst we search for a new location and time in order to attract better numbers.

Mike recorded thanks to Matt P and Pete G for all the work they put into the Juniors and to Jane B for getting us a grant from Exxon.

The balance sheets were proposed by Theresa and seconded by Tony C and duly ratified by all present.

Craig was asked at the last Committee to provided interim balance sheets for the Committee. He has undertaken to do this quarterly.

7 Secretary's Report

See attached report

8 Junior Representatives Report

Covered in Treasurers Report

9 Changes to Constitution

A suggestion was made to lower the quorum for AGMs and EGMs. After debate it was agreed to alter it to 1/3rd of the BA of E fully affiliated membership. This was proposed by Jo, seconded by Matt B and voting was all in favour. Jo to update Constitution accordingly.

MATCHPOINT BADMINTON CLUB
SECRETARY'S REPORT 2001/2002

Well, what a year!

Positives have included excellent team successes, new members of all standards, new Junior members (a rarity these days), good support for events and excellent commitment & back up from some club and committee members. Negatives, making me a very stressed bunny at times, have been injuries, a high level of reserve usage, cancelled matches and players with attitude (thankfully few and far between and normally away players).

TEAM SELECTIONS

The year kicked off with these last August and the Selection Committee elected by the main committee was Mike, Dan, Pete Burgess, Ian Bland and Jacky. Selections are always difficult and tough decisions have to be made but are based on "the best man for the job" basis as seen by those five people. Some people did not agree with the selections or were disappointed, but most just got on and played and tried to prove that they should be higher up the ranking order this year. We added another Southampton Team, just about managed to keep our 4 Teams in Waterside Mixed but unfortunately lost our Waterside Ladies Team and Winchester Mens 2.

FIXTURES EVENINGS

Always interesting - Dan and I covered Waterside, Dan and Jacky Winchester and myself Southampton. Avoiding shift patterns, holiday dates, tournament dates etc. is always fun especially when some Teams say "oh no we cant play then we've already got a match that month!!!". Over 150 matches were arranged and then communicated to Captains, Team Members etc. We held a special Captains meeting for the first time this year which I felt was a great success. We could communicate everything to all captains in one meeting and provide them with paperwork, shuttles etc. at one point in time.

LEAGUE POSITIONS

WATERSIDE LEAGUE

MIXED A

Getting boring now, but they did it again. Under the dual captaincy of Jeanette and Sharon and with a record of played 10, won 9, drew 1, the A Team won Division 1 for the fifth time in a row.

MIXED B

In Division 1 this year Sonia herded her charges into 3rd place. They were on the same points as 2nd, but lost out on game difference.

MIXED C

Ian Bland was at the helm for a difficult year and all credit to the team and their copious reserves for coming 4th in Division 2 with a won 8, lost 6 record. A quick mention here for Matt Pascoe who behaved like a true badminton player and got the place he deserved (in the end)

MIXED D

Pete Gurd turned his hand to Mixed captaincy for the first time and with a record of won 9, lost 5 his team were 2nd in Division 3. Lots of needle next year then, as we will have 2 teams in Division 1 and 2 in Division 2!!

MEN

Barry remained Captain this year and led his Team to an excellent second place in Division 1. He had some good strong reserves to use though!!

WINCHESTER LEAGUE

MIXED 1

Our erstwhile part chairman Mr Woof took over this team and they had an interesting year!. Unfortunately they finished bottom of Division 1 with a record of won 3, lost 7. Never mind think of the great Banerjee handicap from Division 2 next year!!.

MIXED 2

Tony Latimer was persuaded to take on our second Team in Division 2 and they finished an excellent 3rd. With a won 6, lost 4 record.

MIXED 3

Gladys again took up the reins here and after some very close games ended 5th in Division 3 with a won 4, lost 6 record.

LADIES

Chrissie as always looked after the Winchester Ladies and with a record of won 6 lost 2 were unlucky to finish 3rd in Division 1. The second place team had only won 5 games, but there games scores were better.

MENS 1

Matt Bunton went one better than last year and forced, cajoled and generally bullied his mens team into winning the league by just 1 game. Just kidding Matt well done for an excellent result - the first time we have ever won the top mens league. For the record they won 6 games and lost 2

SOUTHAMPTON

MIXED 1

Jacky was in control again, and I do mean totally in control, as her team romped to a played 10 won 10 Division 2 victory and promotion to Division 1 next year.

MIXED 2

We let Matt Pascoe loose with our new 2nd team in Division 3. They won 2, drew 1 and lost 7 to finish 4th.

RESERVE PROBLEMS

Following problems last year we put a new reserve tracking system into place this year and it was a great success - we lost no points through misuse and my thanks to Julie for running the Winchester part of the tracking and all the captains for their co-operation.

TEAM COMPETITIONS

WATERSIDE KNOCKOUT

After losing in round 1 last year the A Team redeemed themselves and that strange pitcher like cup is back where it belongs in our possession this year. Congratulations to Sharon's team who on finals day were, Kim Marsh, Jeanette Worsley, Jo Francis, Laurie Hillman, Dan Amy and Matt Chapman. On the way they beat Butts Ash B, Gangwarily B, Matchpoint B in the semi final and Oaklands in the final.

Sonia's B Team lost their 3rd fourth play off to Butts Ash A, but thanks should be recorded to the players who turned out on a very busy day for Matchpoint. Well done to Julia Bodman, Linda Bradshaw, Judy Webster, Matt Pascoe, Doug Dawson and Jonathan Sims. Stars of the show were Judy and Doug who won a game!! The team beat Gangwarily A and Falcons B on the way losing to our A team in the semi final.

The C Team lost in round 1 to eventual runners up Oaklands.

The D Team lost in round 1 to eventual 3rd placers Butts Ash A.

BANERJEE CUP

A Division 1 handicap of minus a hand and -6 proved too much for our 1st team against Winchester 1 (+5) in the first round. The 2nd Team beat Brookfield 1 and Winchester 2 before losing to eventual winners Notorious in the semi final, while the 3rd Team lost in the first round to Winchester 2. Not a good year, but look out next year when our handicaps will be great!

ESSO CUP

Jacky's A Team reached the final after an excellent semi final win over the very strong Omega. They narrowly lost the final 5-4 to Notorious and I do mean narrowly - Jacky and Laurie lost their 3rd set 15-12. Well done to Jacky, Jane, Julie, Laurie, Matt Bunton and Ian Newcombe.

Matt P's B Team lost to Notorious in the semi final.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

2 years to report on I'm afraid.

Last years competition was played in September and I am happy to report that our Southampton A Team took the title beating Notorious and SIHE Staff on the way. Congratulations to Jacky, Jane, Jeanette, Jo, Matt B, Dan, Ian N and Tony L.

This year it was again the A Team that gained entry to the competition, but with the Waterside Knockout Final and 3rd/4th ply off on the same day the Club was a little stretched.

The team beat Bishops Waltham A, but lost to Omega in the group and then had to play St Denys in the Semi Final. Needless to say they lost, but Matt B & Paul notched up a good victory over their first mens pair. Congratulations to Jacky, Julie, Sonia, Jo, Paul, Matt B, Rob and Ian N.

INTER-DISTRICT TEAM KNOCKOUT

As usual the Waterside League sent 6 unsuspecting soles to represent them in this very tough competition. This years we had 3 players chosen to go. Kim, Jacky and Matt B. They lost to Winchester in round 1 and then Basingstoke in the plate - all 3 ladies games were picked up here though.

TOURNAMENTS

HANTS RESTRICTED

This was run on the same day as the Southampton Champions League tournament, thus limiting our participation. Having said that this was the tournament that finally made the Hampshire Selectors take notice of Mr Hepworth!. In the non handicap events John reached the 3rd round in the singles and the semi finals in the mixed doubles with Top Flight partner Hazel Prince. In the mixed handicap he beat everyone in sight with Hannah Littlecot and in the mens doubles handicap he won 6 out of 8 games to come 3rd with Paul Forrester. This resulted in him being selected for Hampshire 2 & 3 several times during the season - well done John. Kim and Jenny played the ladies handicap but didn't win a game and Yip and Jimmy finished bottom of their mens handicap group.

HANTS OPEN

Only John was brave enough and was 2nd in the mixed event with Hazel, knocking out several seeded pairs on the way.

WATERSIDE

Open - Non Handicap

Again this year held at our home venue of Totton Recreation Centre, we had 4 pairs entered. Jane & Rob won 4 out of 8 games in their group to finish 3rd, while Jenny and John from the same group managed 6/8 and were 2nd. In the other group Matt C foolishly agreed to run around behind me and we managed 5/8, while Matt B and Heathlander Sarah won 7/8 to win the group. This meant our two pairs played each other with Jenny and John taking the honours 21-8. They went on to beat last years winners Rachel and Martin from Caer Gwent 15-6, 9-15, 15-12 in the final.

Mixed Handicap

This year at West Totton and it was that woman Jacky who won again with Heathlands partner Dave for the 3rd year running!. Jeanette played with Rob & Woof and I were there in body if not in mind!

WINCHESTER

Mixed Open - Non handicap

Known as the Luff Cup, Jacky & Matt B were the only Matchpoint Bunnies to brave it and finished a very creditable 2nd to Caer Gwent Mike Mace and Julie Newbold

Mixed Handicap

This year held at Toynbee School, Chandlers Ford and with a good entry of 12 pairs, Matchpoint had 2 pairs and 2 halves entered. Theresa played with Roy from another club and finished bottom of their group, Jacky and Dave (Heathlands) won 3/5 while Matt B and myself won 4 out of 5 to finish 2nd in the group. In the other half Jeanette and Rob won their group with 5 wins. Both Jeanette and Rob and Matt and I won our respective semi finals and then met for an all Matchpoint Final which I am happy to say Matt and I won!!.

Mens and Ladies Doubles

Again at Toynbee School.

The mens event saw 2 pairs form Matchpoint. John and Paul F won 4/5 to finish 2nd in their group while Dan and Matt B won 2/5 to finish 4th. Paul and John then lost their semi final to the eventual winners from Flemming Park.

We had 1 and a half pairs in the ladies. Jacky & Sarah (Heathlands) won 3/7 and finished 6th with 84 points while myself and Jeanette were 5th also with 3/7 but 85 points

BASINGSTOKE

The Basingstoke Open is always tough and 7 brave souls took off to represent us. In mixed Jacky played with Matt B, while Jeanette paired up with Rob and Matt C borrowed Sarah (Heathlands). Then the Sarah & Jacky paired for the ladies and Matt and Matt the mens - reaching the semi finals - an excellent result. John H and Paul F also played the mens.

OXFORD

Just in case they weren't playing quite enough 4 of our number took off to an Oxford Tournament over Easter. John and Paul F played the mens and Jacky and Paul H reached the 1/4 finals of the mixed.

HANTS & ISLE OF WIGHT GAMES

We were again asked to represent New Forest East at the Games and John & Kim, Matt B & Jacky were the two pairs chosen to go. John and Lim had a hard time in their group, but Jacky and Matt pulled off some excellent wins in theirs.

FUN TOURNAMENT

8 pairs took part in this and then 18 of us retired to the pub for copious amounts and sausage, chips and french bread. Pauls dog will never be hungry again!!. As usual partners were drawn on the night and handicaps were rapidly set. Jonathan & Jane won their group with Rob & Denise 2nd, while Jeanette & I won ours with Adrian & Julie 2nd. Then Jane & Jonathan beat Adrian & Julie and Jeanette & I saw off Rob and Denise before beating Jane & Jonathan as well to take the spoils of wine. Fiona was given the "hardest trier" sweets nominated by Julie's Mum.

IOW TOURNAMENT

Matt again managed to persuade some of us to cross the water for their Annual IOW Tournament and Sharon, Jacky, Jeanette, Fran, Jane, Julie, Jenny, Sarah (Heathlands), Fiep (Colbury), myself, Dan, Tony L, Tony Wong, Yip, Woof, Gary, John and Matt took part. I know I won the Ladies and Matt the mens and I think Fran was 2nd in the Ladies and won the Mixed. It was a long time ago - but my bum still remembers it!!! Matt B & Matt C were the only two brave (or is that silly) enough to travel to the return jaunt in Norwich earlier in the year.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

This year held at the beginning of June for 3 weeks our Club Championships started slowly but built to a bumper mixed entry at the end.

Ladies Singles

This was a non event with only Jacky willing and able so she was winner by default, but had to work for it as we made her play in the mens competition!!

Mens Singles

A poor entry of only 10 saw Paul H and John win their groups with Jonathan and Rob 2nd respectively. John then narrowly beat Rob 15-14 while Paul despatched with Jonathan to set up a final of John and Paul, which Paul took 15-7.

Ladies Doubles

Saw just 4 pairs entered. Jacky and I won with 5/6 games won with Sonia and Kim 2nd.

Mens Doubles

8 pairs played in two groups. John & Matt C and Matt B & Paul H won the groups with Laurie & Woof and Rob & Tony L 2nd. In the semis John & Matt saw off Rob & Tony while Paul & Matt despatched Woof & Laurie 15-14. John & Matt took the final 15-12.

Mixed Doubles

12 pairs in two groups saw Jacky & Rob and Nikki S & Tony win the groups with Theresa & Matt C and Kim & John 2nd. In the semis Kim & John knocked out Jacky & Rob and Nikki & Tony saw off Theresa and Matt before losing to Kim and John in a close 15-13 final.

SOCIAL

Once again we had our Xmas function at Southampton Park Hotel. Jeanette did a great job of getting money out of people and we all went and had excellent food, good company and a damn good time.

It's a very long time ago, but we also had a presentation evening last year at the 3 Horse Shoes at Nursling. It was quite a small venue and we wouldn't go there again, but the buffet was excellent, we played skittles, did silly quizzes, presented our prizes for the Club Championships and the special trophies to Jenny Dawkins and Pete Gurd and generally had a good sociable evening..

CLUB NIGHT

Club Night attendance's had been good all year, but Summer attendance has been poor, especially on a Thursday night. Do we still need / want to do 2 nights over the summer I wonder?? No matches had to be played on Club Nights this year so no Club Nights were "lost" and the Committee running the Board seems to work well most of the time.

COACHING

As promised at the last AGM coaching evenings have been set up over the summer. We have 3 sessions planned all with Chris Shepperd, the first one went really well and there is another on Thursday. They were all fully subscribed in advance. Looks like we will be doing more next year!!

NEW COACHES

I am very happy to report that 4 of our members qualified as Coach Part 1's in their own right during the season. Many congratulations to Jane Bickle, Julie Lakomy, Dan Amy and Mike Newton Woof.

JUNIOR COACHING

It is sad to report that after all the effort in setting up the Junior Club it ceased earlier this year due to lack of players. We are hoping to resurrect it in a different location, targeting a different age group shortly. Thanks to everyone who put in time and effort on the Junior project - let's hope it will not be in vain.

DAVID LLOYD

Due to several problems with the courts and many doubts about their intentions the Club did not pursue the move to David Lloyd at Lordshill.

SELECTION FORMS

This years forms for Team Selection are printed and available. Please collect them from me before you leave tonight and have them back to me by Monday 18th August at the very latest. Please be realistic with what you put yourself down for and realise the number of games you could be asked to play. The first fixtures meeting this year is on 7th September so we have to work fast. You will see from the forms that we may be entering 3 Southampton Teams this year, but only 3 Waterside, it will depend on numbers and reserves available etc. Your Selection Sub Committee will be elected by the new Committee immediately following this meeting and will then be announced.

THANK YOU

Finally a big thank you to everyone who has assisted me and the Club this year. All the Team Captains (who have had a horrible job in the main with lots of problems and complications), the Committee and everyone who has supported social and fun events. If I've missed anyone I apologise, thank you anyway, and now you can all breathe a sigh of relief that my report is over for another year.

Jo Francis
