Due to illness in the family Craig had not been able to print off the balance sheets,
however he gave us a summary from memory and promised to make them available
the following week.
The Club made a small loss this year due in part to increased court times for extra
Teams, but also cancelled Matches where we have had to in effect pay double court
fees. Also we now use feather shuttles at lot more - at least twice a month on
Mondays and every Thursday during the summer.
We are still running at just over our magic £2000 reserve figure. The fees are about
right and there is no need for increase however, new fee structures were presented to
the members. They have come about for two reasons:
The need to have all players insured (pay & play as well)
The decision to reduce our fees by the BA of E and Hants fees if players are
paying them elsewhere
The first reason has prompted the removal of "pay & play" status and technically
everyone becomes of reserve status after 6 visits to us as they will be registered with
the BA of E and Hants etc.
The second has been reflected by a reduction of £10 per person leaving the club with
a small administration amount per person.
The fees were proposed by lan and seconded by Sonia. The meeting was in favour of adopting them. Craig reported there were a few small Match fees outstanding form last season, but that all memberships were in. The Treasurers report was proposed by Sonia and seconded by Matt P It was suggested that a list of who pays what be attached to the Club Night Board incase it is not Craig or Jo collecting fees. Jo to address this when new status' known.
7 Secretary's Report
See attached report8 Junior Representatives Report
Matt thanked Mike and Jo for their work on the successful Sport England Grant Bid
He reported he now had 10-12 members aged 14-21. he felt this was good as this
is usually the age when we lose players form the sport.
Initially our Juniors came form schools advertising, but then word of mouth.
More leaflets are planned for September and new equipment is to be purchased to
help coaching.
It is hoped that family fun days will be run too.
The Club has four people going for their Coach Part 1 in September and at least 1
person going for a Leaders Award.
There was a suggestion of Club T Shirts being provided to the Juniors - the
Committee will look at this.
Matt finished by thanking Peter Gurd for his help every Sunday - he couldn't run the
Club successfully without him.9 Changes to Constitution
None were planned by the Committee and none had been received from members.10 Election of Officers and Committee for 2002 12003

1 Website - information is required to keep website up to date etc. Please submit any items to Pete Burgess or Peter Gurd. Information re the Juniors is to go on.
2 David Lloyd Centre - Mike and Jo have met with Brian Hooper who is the Badminton Development Officer there. He approached us with a view to Matchpoint going back there. Last Wednesday 15 members went to the Centre to play on the Courts. This created lots of feed back and comments. Several things need addressing before a return is viable (lights, curtains, window blinds, fans repositioned etc.). Mike has asked for several assurances in writing from the General manger of David Lloyd regarding fees etc. and has also asked to look at their budget forecasts re court fee increases etc. We also have issues with new members and how they would be generated. David Lloyd are willing to waive all joining and monthly fees for existing members but not apparently new ones. Following Mikes report several members spoke of their own experiences of David Lloyd and these were the pertinent points: They are very money orientated They say courts are not being utilised but members see a lot of court usage Club Nights have never been encouraged there They seem to be looking for a self made club to save themselves the bother After all Match point has achieved independently it would be a shame to see it become dependent again They will screw us at every opportunity Very expensive to play badminton there - rackets membership is an extra £10 on top of monthly fee and club night was £4 Would hate to see us swallowed up If new members have to come from David Lloyd we would become finite What happens to us when David Lloyd get their own Club Mike finished this debate by saying that he would not see the Club jeopardised in any way and Pete echoed his sentiments
3 Extra Courts - this was a debate on how to get our top players even better and also improve our other players as well. Three main suggestions were made: A - extra winter Club Nights when no matches on Wednesday or Thursdays designated to Teams so you actually practice with your partners etc. B - Summer friendlies against Teams of a similar or higher standard so we get to play other people C - have a Team Practice night
The following points were made: Team practice doesn't really exclude anyone as we have a practice of trying to find a team place for everyone who wants one. We could list all the men and ladies in strength order and then split them to designated Club Nights We need to player our strongest players against each other or other stronger players in order to improve them Lower players can improve by playing higher ones in Club
It is nice to have an aim e.g. I come to Club night now, but when 1 get better 1 can go to Match Practice Stronger players have no moans about playing with weaker on Monday Club Nights, but do feel they need to play higher standard games as well.
Mike and Pete both emphasised the point that as a Club we treat all members equally and there will be no split of membership.
The Committee will consider these issues at the next meeting
4 - Can we publish a list of qualified coaches on our notice board - Jo to address
5 - We raised £55 for Sport Relief via World Cup sweep stake and Swear Box
6 - Selection forms are ready for collection
The meeting closed at 9:20pm.
Following the meeting the new Committee met briefly and the Selection sub Committee was elected as follows: Dan Amy, Jacky Barron, lan Bland, Pete Burgess, Mike Newton-Woof
MATCHPOINT BADMINTON CLUB
Annual General Meeting
22nd July 2002
CHAIRMAN'S WELCOME
Firstly, 1 would like to thank you for all taking the time this evening to attend our club's 5th AGM and as per my usual opening gambit would like to inform you of the drinking arrangements. This year, due to the unfortunate closure of this wonderful, much used and often busy Bar facility, you will be pleased to hear that Matchpoint has provided the beverages for this evenings entertainment. Don't be shy, please help yourselves, but don't get so plastered that 1 end up having to call your mother or father, husband or wife, boyfriend &/or girlfriend etc. etc.!!! and request a lift home! Woof Cabs are not for hire this evening, but Tony may be? For those of you who are new to the Club, on behalf of the Committee, may 1 welcome, and thank you for attending this evening and would encourage you to participate in the open discussion. We value everyone's comments and input, so please make it known to us that you would like to contribute and speak clearly at the opportune moment. Without further or unnecessary, comment from me, 1 would like to get the AGM underway.
MATCHPOINT BADMINTON CLUB
Annual General Meeting
22nd July 2002
Firstly, 1 would like to convey my thanks (on behalf of the club) to you all for an excellent job, well done, this season. This thanks goes to both individual team players and to team captains, who have had another excellent year and to those regular club players who have yet to be selected for a team, but who consistently show their determination and metal, which is unfortunately lacking in our national game today. We have not had the easiest of seasons with injuries to various players across all divisions and I am personally mindful of the support given by reserve players throughout the season. You all should feel very proud of your and the club's achievements this year, so thank you to everybody. The club has achieved great things this year, with the winning of a "Sports for All' Award from Sport England for just under £5,000 in November 2001 for the assistance in the setting up and running of our new Junior Badminton Club. This award allowed us to supplement costs incurred for junior coaching and court fees, the purchase of equipment and other expenses incurred. 1 would therefore like to thank Matt Pascoe, Peter Gurd and Jo Francis for all their support in running this Junior programme. It is with great regret that 1 must inform you of my pending departure from the Southampton Area and therefore as Chairman of your Club. Due to a change in my personal circumstances, 1 shall be moving out of the area towards the end of this year and therefore 1 thought it opportune that 1 tender my resignation at this meeting. 1 will, however, be supporting the new Chairman Elect during my remaining few months, so you have not got rid of me just yet!!! Sorry! If you have any suggestions for a suitable replacement or indeed should you wish this accolade, please make yourselves or those names known at the appropriate time. In my only complaint in this report, 1 would like to say the word "Commitment". To me (& most men probably!), it brings tears to my eyes, or 1 have problems saying it (especially to the opposite sex!!!), but to the club that you support and offer to play for, 1 would Eke to see you actually play. If you cannot commit to a team then don't; there is nothing worse than a Team Captain continually having to find a replacement or replacements for team members! Please be considerate of your team members, colleagues and the club. Thank you. Whinge over! Finally special thanks must go to your Committee for another excellent year of commitment and organisation, without which we would not have such a successful club to play in, we would not have the entertaining tournaments and various fun night's which have proved again to be very successful and 1 would have even less to do! If you would please join me in thanking them, 1 would be grateful. In my final Chairman's Report, 1 would like to thank you all for making my social and playing time here at Matchpoint certainly the most enjoyable of an the clubs I have ever played at and wish you all the very best of luck for the future, personally and in your sporting achievements. Michael Newton-Woof

MATCHPOINT BADMINTON CLUB
SECRETARY'S REPORT 2001/2002
Its' strange, most Clubs shut down for the summer and their Secretary's get an easy time for a few months, but with Matchpoint just the reverse happens. From June to September is my busiest time with the Club Championships, Committee Meeting, AGM, Presentation Evening and Selection Forms to sort out and all 1 seem to have done for the last few weeks is Matchpoint, Matchpoint, Matchpoint.... Anyway enough of my troubles and on with my report of the year - our most successful yet and look out for articles in local papers following our recent press release blowing our own trumpet.
TEAM SELECTIONS The year kicked off with these last August and again the Selection Committee was a sub committee of the main committee. Mike, Dan, Pete Burgess, Julie and myself were the elected members and as always Team Selections were made on "the best man for the job" basis - they could not be done in any other way as all League rules state that teams must be played in strict strength order. For the first time we entered a Team in the Southampton League and we also just about managed to keep our 4 Teams in Waterside Mixed although ladies were a little scarce. Inevitably some people did not agree with the selections or were disappointed, but most people just got on and played and tried to prove that they should be higher up the ranking order this year.
FIXTURES EVENING As usual Dan armed with a large calendar, shift patterns, contact details, holiday dates, tournament dates etc. did a marvellous job of arranging all the Waterside and Winchester Fixtures with the minimum of clashes. He then let me loose at the Southampton one all by myself Over 150 matches were arranged and then communicated to Captains, Team Members etc. If all goes well and we get our second Southampton Team this year as planned there will be even more and 1 wish Dan and Mike the very best of luck in fitting them in!!
LEAGUE POSITIONS WATERSIDE LEAGUE MIXED A What can 1 say - they did it again. This year under the guidance of Julie Lakomy our A Team won Division 1 for the fourth year in a row. For the record, they played 10, won 10 and only dropped 8 games all season.
MIXED B This year in Division 2, but proving that they really shouldn't have been relegated last year our B Team shepherded by Sonia won Division 2 and rejoin the A's in Division 1 next year. Despite problems along the way, with one player in particular and with getting reserves towards the end of the season, Sonia kept smiling Oust) and they played 10, won 8 drew 2.
MIXED C Adrian took control of the C Team this year and was most amazed to find all bar 1 of his fixtures before Xmas, nothing to do with a a certain pregnant Secretary being in his team of course. Despite the record of played 10, won 3, drew 3 and lost 4 ( 2 of which were to our B Team) we found ourselves being relegated and will play in Division 3 next year with....
MIXED D
lan Bland again took on Captaincy of the D Team and after a 4th last year they were second this year gaining promotion with a record of played 12, won 11 lost 1. They only lost out on winning the League by a game difference of 4.
LADIES
Again under Theresa's guidance, our Ladies had a tough year. They finished bottom of the ladies Division, but as there is only 1 Division of ladies they had to play several Division 1 Mixed Team ladies. Theresa struggled for players at times, which amazes & saddens me when she only needed four ladies from the 18 in the Club - could we really all not play? The record - played 7, lost 7.
MEN
Barry took over as Captain this year and despite a few hiccups with ordering of players, led his Team to a good second place in Division 2 earning promotion to the first Division next season. The original Team selected for Barry never materialised as two of the four men didn't actually join the Club despite putting up for selection, but with so many men to chose from and Mike coming back at the end of the season, Barry was able to field probably a stronger team on every occasion.
WINCHESTER LEAGUE MIXED 1
Jane Bickle was again in charge this year and went one better than last year winning Division 2 of the League. This means that we will have a Team in Division 1 of the Winchester League for the first time on our history. Well done those players and good luck next year. They played 10 and won 10.
MIXED 2
In Division 3, Jeanette captained this team and was beset with problems from the start. One player just would not behave. Despite having to call up reserves at very short notice after being let down - indeed in one case just minutes before the match started, Jeanette's band of merry men (and women) had an excellent season winning Division 3 and being promoted to Division 2 for next year. Played 10 , won 10
MIXED 3
The first year we have entered a third team, so Gladys' Team found themselves in Division 4. They had a good season coming 3rd with played 12, won 7, lost 5. Just nicely set for promotion next year.
LADIES
The Ladies League was still split and then one Team dropped out, which meant Chrissie's Team had only 6 matches all season. Their record of played 6, won 4, lost 2 took them to their highest ever position of 2nd in Division 1.
MENS
1 Matt Bunton took over this Team for the season and what a good job he did. With a record of Played 10, won 8, lost 2 the team were 2nd in Division 1 by just one point - which in Winchester Leagues means just 1 game. The closest of possible margins after the 90 games competed in.
MENS 2
Matt Pascoe took over this Team in Division 3 of the Mens League. Again his enthusiasm was beyond compare despite having a tough season. Played 10, won 2, lost 8
SOUTHAMPTON
Our first year ever in the Southampton League saw Jacky take control and 1 have never known a Team Captain use so many reserves. 1 don't think she had one game with her proper team out!!. Never mind - it obviously worked as they won Division 3 with a Played 12, won 12 record. Indeed they only dropped 5 games all year.
RESERVE PROBLEMS
This year for the first time ever we found ourselves having points deducted from Teams for using ineligible players. Two Waterside Teams & two Winchester were affected & we are looking at ways to prevent it from happening next year. There is nothing worse than playing a hard match, winning and then having the points taken away because X had already played up too many times or was playing in the wrong position. It looks like we will be having a Captains meeting before the start of the season & probably a point of contact for each League for the Captains to notify if they are going to use a reserve. We hope this will help.
TEAM COMPETITIONS
WATERSIDE KNOCKOUT
I couldn't believe it, 1 went on holiday and came back to here that the A Team had been knocked out in the 1 st round of the Cup by the Team they beat in the final last year. Words defied me.
The B Team had an excellent run, they beat Heathlands B 9-0, Oaklands 8-1 and Falcons A 5-4 and then lost in the Final to Butts Ash A by the closest of margins 5-4. In the Match 7 of the nine rubbers went to three games. Players in the final were - Sharon Amy, Sonia Doublet, Chrissie Bynam, Ranjan Bennerjee Rob Lloyd and lan Newcombe.
The C Team won their first match against Forest Green 9-0, but then lost to Falcons A in the second round.
The D Team lost 6-3 to Oaklands in round 1.
BANERJEE CUP
A much better year than last year. Jane's A Team won the Banerjee Cup for the second time in our history, much to the delight of Ranjan and his Mum. I'm sure the rest of the Team were pleased too - that's Jacky Barron, Kim Marsh, Jane Bickle, Matt Bunton and John Hepworth. For the record they beat West Hill 2, BTC and Caer Gwent 2 in the rounds and Four Marks in the final.
INTER-DISTRICT TEAM KNOCKOUT
As usual we sent 6 unsuspecting soles to Basingstoke to represent the Waterside League in this very tough competition. This was the night after the Banerjee Cup and as Jacky had managed to injure herself Jenny stood in a very short notice. This years Team was therefore Kim, Jenny, Sarah (borrowed from Heathlands), Matt Bunton, Matt Chapman and John. All 1 can say is they won a couple of games - well done and thank you for representing us and the League
TOURNAMENTS HANTS RESTRICTED
It was really nice to see so many of our pairs taking part in the Hampshire Restricted Tournament at Portsmouth. If we want to get Matchpoint promoted and attract players etc. we have to win Leagues, but also get players out there in Tournaments and get them noticed. In the Mens Doubles Tony Latimer & Yip won one of their games, Dan & Matt Bunton won two and most successful were Gary & John who won 3 and were 2nd in their group. In the Ladies Doubles, both Jeanette & Jane and Kim & Jacky won a game each. In the Mixed Doubles Jacky & Heathlands partner Dave won one game as did Kim & "found on the day partner" Terry, Jo & Gary won 2, Jenny & John won 3, but most successful were Jeanette & Matt who won 5 games in their group and progressed to the quarter finals - but no further!
WATERSIDE
Open - Non Handicap
This year held at our home venue of Totton Recreation Centre, we had 4 pairs entered. Sharon & Dan & Jo & Andy both won 2 games, Jeanette & Rob won 4 games and Jacky & Matt B were the stars of the show coming 2nd in their group and losing in the semi final by the closest of margins 15-14.
Mens and Ladies Doubles
Held at West Totton and didn't we do well. John & Yip won the mens event with 7 out of 8 games won, Gary & Tony Wong were 2nd winning 4 out of 8. Matt B & Tony Latimer were 5th winning two of their games. In the ladies Jacky & Heathlands partner Sarah won taking seven out of 8 games, Kim & Jenny were 2nd with 5 out of 8, Sonia & Julie were 3rd with 4 wins and Jeanette & myself were 4th with 2 wins.
Mixed Handicap
This year at Gangwarily & with such even pairs that no handicaps were imposed, It was that woman Jacky again who won, this time with Heathlands partner Dave-they won 8 out of 10 games. Jenny & John were 2nd also with 8 wins, but they had dropped more points. Sharon & Dan were 4th with 5 wins & Sonia & Matt B were 6th with "just the 1 Mrs Wembley".
WINCHESTER
Mxed Open - Non handicap
Known as the Lufr Cup and held at the at the Lido in Winchester. We had one and a half pairs entered. Jacky & Heathlander Dave (again) were 4th overall with 4 wins and Jeanette & Matt B were 5th with 3 wins. This is always a really tough day with several Division 1 pairs.
Mixed Handicap
This year at IBM Hursley this event saw an excellent 14 pairs entered. John & Top Flight partner Hana Littlecott won their group with 5 wins out of 6, while Jeanette & Rob were second with 4 wins. Jacky & Dave were also in this group and were 3rd with 3 wins. In the other group Matt B with imported partner Sarah Green won with 6 wins out of 6. In the semi finals Sarah & Matt beat Jeanette & Rob (time for a domi at home) and Hana & John came through the other one. The final was a close fought affair over three games, but saw Sarah & Matt as final victors and winners of the Renton Cup.
Mens and Ladies Doubles
Again at IBM Hursley.
The mens event saw an absolute clean sweep for Matchpoint with our pairs taking 1 st, 2nd and 3rd out of the 9 pairs entered. John & Gary won with 8 wins, Matt & Dan were 2nd with 7 and Yip & Jimmy 3rd with 6.
We had 3 and a half pairs in the ladies. Jacky & Sarah faired best and were 3rd with 6 wins, Jenny & Kim won 4 games, Jeanette & Nicola Griggs won 1 and Sharon & Sonia had won one when Sharon had to retire injured.
Lower Restricted Myself & Pete Gurd trooped off to the Lido to take part in this one and we were 4th. However I feel 1 should really point out that there were only 4 pairs entered - enough said!!!
BASINGSTOKE
The Basingstoke Open is always tough and four brave souls took off to represent us. In mixed Jacky played with Matt B, while Jeanette paired up with Matt C, then the two ladies played ladies and the men played mens - as you would!. Matt & Matt were most successful coming through the group stage, but not reaching the final.
HANTS & ISLE OF WIGHT GAMES
We were asked to provide the pairs for New Forest East again this year and Jacky, Matt, Julie and Dan were all due to troop off. Jacky then injured herself again and Jane took her place. Another tough day, but if we keep playing this calibre of opposition we will get better and better.
FUN TOURNAMENT
We again had a Club fun tournament this year and 13 of us had our partners picked at random, handicaps hastily set and hared around the courts for a couple of hours before adjourning to the pub for sausage and chips. It was made much more entertaining by Ken's black bin bags over the nets - all 1 could see was knobbly knees and top of heads. Also 13 was a really nice number to partner up - not' 1 Anyway, Chrissie was ladies victor with Tracey 2nd and Matt B was mens winner with Craig 2nd. Well done Ken, a good bit of fun.
IOW TOURNAMENT
Matt and Jeanette managed to persuade some of us to cross the water for their Annual IOW Tournament and if 1 have forgotten anybody 1 apologise, but 1 think Sharon, Jacky, Jeanette, myself, Dan, Tony L, Y1p, Gary and Matt took part in the mens and Ladies on the Saturday with Matt winning the Mens with his partner and me the ladies with mine. While Jane, Jacky, Jeanette, myself and Matt took part in the Mixed on the Sunday with Jane winning and Matt second. I have never work so hard in all my life and my bum ached for days afterwards!
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
This year held at the end of June and early July for 3 weeks our Club Championships saw more entries than ever before and some very close games.
Ladies Singles
This saw 6 ladies taking part with Jane narrowly taking victory on 43 points from Jacky on 41 and Jeanette on 40.
Mens Singles
A good 16 entries. John, Dan, Pete Gurd and Paul Wolf won their groups with Paul Forrester, Tony Carter, Mike and Matt Bunton respectively 2nd. John, Dan and the two Pauls won the quarters, John and Paul F then won the semis and John was eventual victor 15-9 in the final despite starting some 8 points behind.
Ladies Doubles
Saw 8 pairs entered. They played in two groups with Group 1 being won by Jacky & Fran from Jo & Jeanette and Group 2 by Kim & Jenny from Gladys & Jane. The semis saw Jacky & Fran and Kim & Jenny come through and the final was taken by Kim & Jenny 15-8.
Mens Doubles
9 pairs played in two groups. Dan & Mike won Group 1 from Matt P & Rob, while John & Paul F took Group 2 from lan Bland & Tony Carter. The semis saw John & Paul and Matt & Rob come through and the final was won by Matt & Rob 15-14 starting off of a very useful +7 handicap. A special mention here to Pete Gurd who played in both groups when Paul Wolfs partner failed to show.
Mixed Doubles
Wow - 16 pairs entered and we played in 4 Groups with the top two going through. Group winners were Jeanette & Matt, Jo & Gary, Jacky & Rob and Jenny & John, while runners up were Jane & Tony C, Sharon & Mike, Chrissle & Ranjan and Theresa & Matt C. The quarters saw Jeanette & Matt, Jacky & Rob, Jane & Tony and Jenny & John as victors. Jacky & Rob then beat Jeanette & Matt 15-12 and Jenny & John took Jane & Tony 15-8 before Jenny & John run out final victors 15-10 over Jacky & Rob
SOCIAL
Once again we had our Xmas function at Southampton Park Hotel. Jeanette did a great job of getting money out of people and we all went and had excellent food, good company and a damn good time. Watch out though she's at it again and will willingly relieve you of £25 for this years event on Friday 20th December.
It's a very long time ago, but we also had a presentation evening last year at the Bold Forrester at Marchwood. Jane had rallied the troops, got a bunch of us there and then set us fiendish quizzes to keep us amused whilst waiting to throw our balls. As usual we presented the Club Championship awards, but also two other Matchpoint Challenge awards to Debbie Woods and Rob Lloyd as most improved players in the Club for the year. It certainly inspired Rob looking at this years results, but Debbie promptly left the Club to travel the World - let's hope we don't have the same effect on this years winners - who are they? - you'll have to come to the Four Horse Shoes on Saturday and find out!!.
CLUB NIGHT
Club Night attendance's have been excellent on Mondays and not bad at all on summer Thursdays. No matches had to be played on Club Nights this year so no Club Nights were "lost" and the Committee running the Board seems to work well. We will have two people running the board each night in future as it is often difficult to set up enough games in advance on the board if you are playing and Committee Members do want to play as well as run the board.
COACHING DAY
After last years great success and everyone saying "Oh yes - I'd come again" how disappointing that we had to cancel the coaching day this year with only three people paid up by the deadline. I'm not saying any more, but if you want another one, lets have some genuine interest up front.
JUNIOR COACHING
Following our successful Sport England bid we received our monies in December and looked to launch our Junior Club at the start of February. We had a few teething problems, but Matt Pascoe assisted by Pete Gurd now has a Junior Club on Sundays and it is expanding. We are having another publicity push for September, but if you know of any juniors 15-21 who would like to learn to play badminton or can play and want some practice, put them in touch with Matt. We have purchased 16 Club Rackets and have started a book library (see the notice board for the list of titles available).
SELECTION FORMS
This years forms for Team Selection are printed and available. Please collect them from me before you leave tonight and have them back to me by Monday 19th August at the very latest. Please be realistic with what you put yourself down for and realise the number of games you could be asked to play. This year some teams have suffered from a lack of commitment from just a few people, but it has a knock on effect to all Teams. Please bear this in mind also. The first fixtures meeting this year is on 1 st September so we have to work fast. You will see from the forms that we plan to enter 2 Southampton League Teams if possible this. Your Selection Sub Committee will be elected by the new Committee immediately following this meeting and will then be announced. 1 am standing down from selection this year to let someone else have a go. 1 have done it for far too long.
THANK YOU
Finally a big thank you to everyone who has assisted me and the Club this year. All the Team Captains (who have had a horrible job in the main with lots of problems and complications), the Committee and everyone who has supported social and fun events. If I've missed anyone I apologise, thank you anyway, and now you can all breathe a sigh of relief that my report is over for another year.
Jo Francis
